A true hidden gem, the Westfjords offer some of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes. Named Europe’s most scenic destination by the Luxury Travel Guide, the region features deep fjords, majestic mountains, lava caves, rich wildlife, peaceful fishing villages, and far fewer travellers than elsewhere in the country.
Itinerary
Day 1: Keflavík – Borgarnes
Arrival at Keflavík Airport according to individual arrangements. A transfer leads through Hvalfjörður, with a stop at the former whaling station and war museum. The day ends in Borgarnes. If time permits, cafés and historic houses await discovery. Overnight in Borgarnes.
Day 2: Snæfellsnes Peninsula – Stykkishólmur
The journey continues to Snæfellsnes, known for its volcanic peaks, lava fields, black sand beaches, and striking coastal cliffs. Highlights include the lava cave Vatnshellir, charming fishing villages, and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, recognisable from film and television. Overnight in Stykkishólmur.
Day 3: Breiðafjörður Bay – South Coast of the Westfjords
A morning boat trip across Breiðafjörður reveals a landscape dotted with over 3,000 islets. Seals and seabirds are often spotted. The journey continues to the southern coastline of the Westfjords. Overnight stay along the south coast.
Day 4: Látrabjarg Cliffs and Rauðisandur
The day is dedicated to exploring the dramatic cliffs of Látrabjarg, one of Europe’s largest bird cliffs. Puffins are often seen up close.
